CARMEL MEADOWS / CARMEL RIVER STATE BEACH — October 29, 2026. Residents and visitors using the southern Carmel coast should not assume every familiar beach entrance is open. California State Parks reports temporary closures of beach access off Scenic Road at Ocean View and Valley View, with construction at the Valley View access point expected to continue through the beginning of November.
What’s closed and what remains available?
The closure notice concerns the Ocean View and Valley View entrances from Scenic Road. It does not say Carmel River State Beach as a whole is closed. The agency specifically says the main parking-lot entrance remains open and that multiple access points south of the Carmel River and lagoon remain available.
The park’s main public parking lot is reached via Rio Road, Santa Lucia Avenue and Carmelo Street from Highway 1. Residents near Carmel Meadows can ask State Parks about the most suitable southern access for their mobility needs, but this general closure notice does not guarantee that a particular informal neighborhood path is unobstructed at any moment.
Why residents should check before a beach walk
Temporary access work can affect where people park and how far they must walk, particularly when bringing children, mobility equipment or dogs. The park’s published rules require dogs to remain on leash. The agency warns that swimming, wading or approaching the surf can be hazardous at this coast, especially near Monastery Beach; beach access is not permission to enter dangerous surf.
Is there a firm reopening date?
No. State Parks says Valley View work will extend into early November but does not promise a particular reopening day or a definitive schedule for the Ocean View entrance. Beachgoers should use the official park update and posted fencing rather than rely on estimates.
For help planning an outing, consult Carmel River State Beach’s official access notice or call the Monterey District at (831) 649-2836. This public-access story is independent of the county’s separate Carmel Lagoon sandbar-management funding decision.
